Our History
1970
Central Oregon Battering and Rape Alliance (COBRA) Established as a 501(c)(3) Organization by volunteers.
1981
COBRA’s first office was donated, allowing the volunteers to set up the 24-hour hotline. A COBRA office was opened in Redmond this same year.
1984
COBRA support groups were established in Prineville, Madras and Redmond.
1989
COBRA’s services expanded to Grant County.
1990
A shelter was built, one of six in the nation specifically designed as a domestic violence shelter. The first Children’s Advocate was hired.
1991
Deschutes County Domestic Violence Council was established.
1994
COBRA had 5 official staff members and a is joined by a focused Board of Directors.
1995
COBRA opens the Madras outreach office.
1996
COBRA opens it’s Prineville office.
2001
Support groups offered in LaPine and Redmond
2003
24 hour Hospital Response Team created
2004
Mary’s Place, a supervised visitation and exchange center, was opened.
2007
COBRA celebrates 30 years, and renames the organization to Saving Grace, in order to move away from the negative connotations of “battering” and “rape”. The name was inspired by a survivor, who called the organization her “Saving Grace”.
2007
5th Year in a row, Saving Grace was named top 10 best non-profits in Oregon.
2013
Established Survivor Housing Program, providing specialized housing assistance to survivors.
2020
Saving Grace celebrated their 45th Anniversary.
Today & Tomorrow
Today, Saving Grace is actively providing comprehensive support services to survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and stalking. We offer emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, and crisis hotline support. Our dedicated team and volunteers are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for those in need.
Tomorrow, Saving Grace aims to expand its outreach and prevention efforts, increase community education on violence prevention, and enhance its support services. We are focused on building stronger community partnerships and advocating for policy changes to create a violence-free future for all.
